What is NAAC?

The UGC established the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in Bangalore in September 1994 to assess the nation’s institutions’ and universities’ performance. One of the NAAC’s missions is to oversee the accreditation, assessment, and performance evaluation of the country’s universities and other institutions. Rather than being punitive or judgmental, the goal of NAAC is to continuously improve institutions of higher learning while allowing them to maximize their resources, opportunities, and capacities. The process of assessment involves evaluating the performance of an organization and/or its constituent parts using a combination of peer review and self-evaluation utilizing predetermined standards. The term “accreditation” refers to the five-year accreditation granted by the NAAC. Currently, NAAC accreditation and assessment are voluntary.

India boasts one of the largest and broadest educational systems globally. Access to higher education has increased as a result of privatization, rapid growth, increased autonomy, and the creation of programs in newly emerging industries. However, it has also given rise to general apprehension regarding the value and caliber of postsecondary education. The National Policy on Education (NPE, 1986) and the Program of Action (PoA, 1992) advocated the establishment of an independent national accrediting body and outlined strategic goals for the policies to address these problems. Because of this, the University Grants Commission (UGC) established the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 1994 as a separate organization with its main office located in Bengaluru. NAAC’s vision statement states that the organization’s goal is to integrate quality assurance into the core operations of higher education institutions (HEIs).

The General Council (GC) and Executive Committee (EC) of the NAAC, which is composed of academics, policymakers, and administrators of higher education from across the Indian system, are in charge of running the organization. The NAAC’s GC President chairs the UGC and recommends a well-known academician to chair the EC. The Director serves as the GC and EC member-secretary as well as the academic and administrative head of NAAC. The advisory and consultative committees that NAAC occasionally forms, in addition to the legislative bodies that set its policies and core staff that assist with its operations, provide information to the organization.

Benefits and significance of ‘NAAC’ accreditation:

  • Institution to identify its strengths, shortcomings, and possibilities via an educated assessment process
  • Identification of internal regions for planning and resource allocation
  • Collegiality on campus
  • Financing agencies search for solid data for performance financing.
  • Institutions to begin creative and advanced approaches to pedagogy
  • A new sense of direction and identity for institutions
  • The society searches for credible information about the education supplied.
  • Employers search for credible information about the level of education supplied to the potential recruits.
  • Intra- and inter-institutional interactions
